The sawa’s of Munduk and the great lakes

You can reach Bedugul from Seririt through Mayong and Munduk. This is a lovely tranquil route leading you past several vast rice terraces. You end up at the three great lakes of Danau Tamblingan, Danau Buyan and Danau Bratan. Lake Bratan fills the crater of the vulcano Gunung Catur, since long extinguished and often veiled in mists. Because of the importance of the lake for the irrigation of the surrounding farmlands, the people of Bedugul honour Dewi Danau, the godess of the lake. Her temple, Pura Ulun Danau Bratan, is located on a small promontory in the lake.

Lake Batur

Lake Batur, north of the mother temple of Besakih, is a beautiful lake. As the morning advances, the clouds appear, so make sure to arrive before 10 o’clock. Drive to Penelokan (this means "Place to see"). This village is located at 1450 metres altitude and offers you a splendid view of the vulcano and Lake Batur, a very important waterreservoir for the fertile agriculture of southern Bali. You can also see the surrounding villages from there and Gunung Agung in the east, with clear skies the view reaches as far as the sea.

Taman Nasional Bali Barat

In Cekik lie the large headquarters of Taman Nasional Bali Barat, Bali’s National Park. Here you can apply for permits for expeditions through the park. It is mandatory to make use of the services of an official guide; vast areas of the park are inaccessible for the public. The facilities of the park, that was founded in 1984, are limited. The reserve of 760 km² offers one of the last true virgin areas of Bali. It harbours deer, civetcats (?), monkeys and bantengs (wild oxen). It is also the refuge of the almost extinct Bali sterling (Rothschild’s sterling staat er in mijn gids). A 24 km long trail takes you around the sloping hillsides of the Gunung Prapat Agung, the mountain that rises in the centre of the reserve on the western side of the island.

Dolphins

The beaches of Lovina are of lava-sand (dark sand). Here you can enjoy a beautiful sunset. You can go diving or snorkeling in tranquil and crystal clear water; the calm sea and shallow laguna make this an ideal location for snorkelers and inexperienced divers. You can rent a boat to take you to the most beautiful diving areas, these are located a bit east of Lovina. Another option is to head out for the open sea at, or preferably before, sunrise and look for dolphins. The chances of seeing these animals is about 80%. Your boat can be surrounded by hundreds of playing, jumping and blowing dolphins. Make reservations at least one day in advance, ask Anik. The expedition takes about 2 hours (and don’t agree to go back after 1 hour already). It is also possible that you can see the dolphins from your own terrace at Loka Residence (binoculars are available).

Area of Ubud

Ubud, Bali’s cultural centre, is located in an idyllic spot and blessed with a natural creativity. Apart from that, Ubud is in the centre of Bali and the surroundings are without question a dream wonderland. Ubud is hidden between forests and rice fields and offers even the most spoilt hiker numerous beautiful walks through its nature. Also by car you can explore the surroundings of this artisan town. Here you will find a true tropical jungle.
